Choosing a Carpet Style from Enhance Floors & More

There is nothing that compares to the comfortable, soft feel of carpet underfoot. Carpet provides a comfy, safe place for kids to play. It reduces the risk of injury. Carpet does require a bit more maintenance than vinyl or tile, but there is no substitute for its overall comfort, warmth, and sound absorption.

With all of the designs, materials, and colors of carpet that are available, choosing carpet can be difficult. Some carpet requires frequent cleaning that may not fit into a busy schedule. The wrong carpet can show stains, fade, or wear out quickly. Here are some tips for protecting your investment and choosing the best carpet for your home.

Carpet styles

Carpet is available in many styles. They include:

  • Textured
  • Frieze
  • Saxony
  • Berber
  • Plush

These are the terms that apply to the pile of a carpet. Pile is the carpet surface that you see. The yarn is either folded over into loops , cut straight across, or both to form tufts. Each style has a look that is distinctive. The look is not necessarily the primary consideration when choosing carpet. Consider the way your lifestyle meshes with the carpet style you want.

Plush carpet

Plush carpet has a highly twisted pile that is inviting, soft, and thick. It also shows vacuum tracks and footprints. Something called 'pooling' can develop. Areas of the carpet appear shaded due to reversals in the common direction of fibers in the carpet. Plush carpet is best in low-traffic areas, such as living rooms or master bedrooms

Berber carpet

In contrast, Berber carpet is dense and flat and is crafted from continuous loops of fiber. It can be level, multi-loop or cut-and-loop in design. These attributes make Berber carpet extremely durable. It does not show stains, soil, or tracks. Berber carpet is ideal for places kids frequent or high-traffic areas.

Textured carpet

Textured carpet has fibers that are cut at different heights. The process causes the textured carpet to reflect light. Dirt and tracks are difficult to spot. Textured carpet is another option great for high-traffic areas.

Frieze carpet

Frieze carpet is a cut-pile product having slightly twisted fibers. Frieze carpet is not as formal as plush, but fancier than many Berber or textured carpets options. It feels soft to the feet. Its fuzziness hides dirt and footprints well.
